PlaneTER: How TER regional rail is reducing its environmental impact

A key component of TER’s 2021-2025 strategic plan, PlaneTER calls for deploying new, greener technologies that make rail transport even more eco-friendly.

Eco-friendly by definition

Every day, regional rail passengers keep 1.1 million cars off the road. By choosing rail, they’re opting for one of the most eco-friendly mobility solutions around. And soon we’ll transition to power sources that are even greener—hydrogen, biofuels and next-generation batteries. Armed with these new technologies, SNCF and France’s regional transport authorities will make TER passengers’ carbon footprints even smaller.

  • 1 million

cars stay off the road every day thanks to regional trains

  • At 8,200 TERs a day,

    1

additional passenger in each train avoids 20,000 tonnes of CO2

  • 73%

of our trains are now electric or dual-mode

TER hybride

On track for hybrid TERs

Hybrid trains are greener, quieter and cheaper, and they’ll soon be running in 4 French regions. They’ll reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut energy consumption by up to 20%.

Hydrogen TER: arriving in 2025

We’re also developing hydrogen TERs, which underwent preliminary testing in late 2023. These new trainsets will soon replace the diesel TER locomotives now running on the non-electrified sections of our network.

TER à batterie en Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Battery TER: coming soon

The Battery TER project—backed by SNCF Group, 5 five French regions and train manufacturer Alstom—replaces diesel engines with lithium batteries. This shift will cut CO2 emissions and reduce energy consumption up to 20%.

Biofuel trains: running on plant power

In a first for France, we’re trialling B100 biofuel as a replacement for diesel in 15 TER trainsets on Normandy’s Paris–Granville line. If successful, this new solution could cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 60%.

Simple and pragmatic

PlaneTER is a pragmatic campaign to unite TER’s customers, its 26,000 employees, and local stakeholders behind a simple idea: when more people choose TER, CO2 emissions drop significantly.
