There’s no better way to grasp the full scope of the French rail network than browsing our detailed maps. All of our maps—for regional rail, the national network, and the European system—can be viewed online.
Our purpose
With our 50,000 employees—including 30,000 working in the field, day and night—we’re developing our rail offer to meet new environmental, economic and social challenges. And as infrastructure manager for the France’s national network, SNCF Réseau is an important player in the broader French and European rail systems.

What we do
Everything we do focuses on growing rail operations. We orchestrate rail traffic. We sell access rights to the French rail network. And we maintain, upgrade and expand railway installations and equipment, adapting the network to growing mobility needs.
We also serve the French rail system as a whole, by coordinating Group-level crisis management, piloting a system-wide accessibility strategy, and overseeing passenger station management through our subsidiary, SNCF Gares & Connexions.
Our vision for 2030
Our strategic plan aligns perfectly with SNCF Group strategy, which calls for us to do even more to serve customers and local communities. Our aim is to double freight rail’s modal share and sharply increase passenger rail’s share by 2030.
Our near-term goals
- Step up the pace of network upgrades to make our infrastructure resilient, improve on-time performance, handle more trains, and meet the highest safety standards.
- Develop a network that meets local needs for movement of people and goods, including Metropolitan Regional Express Service (SERM) for cities, major new line construction, and small local lines.
- Spark innovation and cooperation in our industry and team up with other players to meet the challenges of the green transition and boost rail’s appeal.
- Continue to advance the green transition by investing in the circular economy, cutting our carbon emissions, preserving vegetation and biodiversity, and more.
Modernizing the network
We’re constantly upgrading our network to improve performance. In 2023 alone, we completed 1,600 projects to modernize infrastructure and expand traffic volume. Many of these works focus on the Paris region, which handles 70% of French passenger activity.
Making sustainable mobility a reality
At SNCF Réseau, we’re developing and deploying innovative solutions that address the rail system’s challenges—from the environment to labour relations to good corporate citizenship. Our aim? To build a safe, eco-friendly, socially responsible network.
Create value for customers by putting their satisfaction at the heart of our corporate strategy, and for stakeholders by enhancing the quality of our dialogue with them.
Ensure the overall safety of rail operations, promote health and safety in the workplace, and keep the network secure.
Be a more socially responsible employer by ensuring gender balance and offering job opportunities to young people and people with disabilities.
Enhance our network resilience to ensure quality service and operations over the long term.
Be a model corporate citizen by committing to responsible procurement and contributing to the social and solidarity economy and to local economies.
Act locally for the environment by serving the energy transition, advancing the circular economy, protecting biodiversity, and reducing rail noise.

Exporting our expertise
For years we’ve worked with project owners and infrastructure managers outside France, helping roll out new technologies, consulting on improvements in safety and operational performance, and more.
Within SNCF Group, we also provide services to other business units with international projects.
