Keolis Bordeaux takes action to combat global warming

Keolis, which is responsible for public transport in the Gironde city, has introduced measures to improve the comfort of passengers and drivers in the event of extreme heat. The network is also committed to improving its energy performance and preserving resources and biodiversity.

With extreme temperatures in the summer months and heavy rain and flooding in the winter, Bordeaux, like the rest of France, is subjected to the effects of global warming. Determined to anticipate climate risks, the Métropole has therefore committed to an initiative to which Keolis Bordeaux Métropole Mobilités, which operates the region's public transport network, is contributing.

Improving comfort for passengers and drivers

Our current trials

  • installation of anti-UV film on tramway windows and doors
  • white paint on the roof to prevent the equipment from overheating
  • testing a new cooling system that renews the air by purifying the CO2

A "heatwave procedure" for drivers

Bordeaux Métropole also plans to activate a "heatwave procedure" 5 days before any episode of very hot weather, with 3 levels of intensity depending on the following temperature levels: from 30°, 34° and 37°. In particular, it provides for the assignment of 3 driver-conductors to deal with faulty equipment or replace a driver.

In addition, insulated water bottles have been distributed to drivers and a list of the 23 sites with air-conditioned premises, drinks dispensers and water fountains on the network has been sent to them.

Reducing our environmental impact

Our commitments

As well as the steps taken to prevent the risks associated with global warming, Keolis Bordeaux Métropole Mobilités is also committed to reducing its environmental impact. How? By improving its energy performance and working to preserve water and biodiversity.

Two examples of actions taken

  • using green electricity to run our tramways and bioGNV for our buses, and introducing an eco-driving programme in 2017
  • optimising watering to reduce the amount of water used for grass on the tramway platform by 40%, and testing the replacement of grass with new plant species that are more resistant to drought, easy to maintain and environmentally friendly
