Harnessing data to make our stations more energy efficient
Our multidisciplinary consulting firm AREP has developed a digital tool to help SNCF Gares & Connexions cut buildings’ energy consumption. CONSEO uses big data and data visualization to identify energy-saving opportunities and help us meet our efficiency targets.
With 15,000 electricity metres in our 3,000 stations across France, we needed a way to monitor each site’s consumption in detail. AREP’s engineering teams began by analyzing energy
data from 10 stations. Their goal? To determine whether electricity use was related to weather conditions, station occupancy levels, and even daylight hours.
Visualizing energy use with heat maps
Based on these initial findings, the CONSEO team built a database and then collected datasets from a further 230 pilot stations. They converted raw data into heat maps so energy managers and station managers can see exactly when and where energy is being consumed in their buildings. Thanks to this online platform, they can spot and correct anomalies that drive up electricity consumption—such as heating left on after hours, unnecessary lighting during daylight hours, and weather-related inefficiencies.

Scaling the tool
CONSEO not only optimizes station lighting and heating. It also helps us size our electricity supply contracts correctly, aligning these on real needs and avoiding the cost of subscribing to more capacity than we need.
Today, CONSEO helps station masters optimize their electricity use, but it could soon be used to reduce water and gas consumption, too. And its potential doesn’t end there. SNCF Voyageurs heavy maintenance technicentres, RLE warehouses and even external clients outside SNCF Group could also benefit.
