Nîmes, France’s first eco-sustainable railway station
Built with carefully chosen materials, Nîmes Pont-du-Gard station’s eco-design preserves local biodiversity and uses renewable energy. In September 2020, a year after opening and initial tests, Nîmes Pont-du-Gard station was certified as an Occitanie Sustainable Building.
First station to qualify as an Occitanie Sustainable Building
The title recognizes the demanding environmental standards set by teams at AREP1 and Gares & Connexions. They envisioned an eco-designed station made with low-impact materials that would preserve biodiversity, manage water use, and take a green approach to temperature control.
8,000m2 of solar panels provide shade for the station’s car park. And AREP and SNCF Gares & Connexions are now planning 15 new eco-designed stations.

The Occitanie Sustainable Building Plan
Backed by its host region, the Occitanie Sustainable Building Plan aims to promote a social model that’s more eco-friendly and uses natural resources more efficiently. How? By motivating players in construction, real estate and development to cut their greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.
