Gare du Nord

With "Horizon 2024", Gare du Nord is being transformed

Thanks to our SNCF Gares & Connexions teams, Europe's largest station has been modernised to offer passengers a new experience in terms of welcome, station layout, services, shops and intermodality.

Responding better to passenger needs

As a major gateway to France and Europe, Gare du Nord (Paris-Nord) is being transformed to adapt to changes in rail traffic and increased passenger flows. After two years of works, with no interruption to traffic, an initial modernisation project has seen the light of day. Under the project ownership of SNCF Gares & Connexions and the project management of our multi-disciplinary agency AREP, these works are providing specific solutions to the needs of everyday users, customers of the main national and international lines, and local residents.

  • 1,000

SNCF staff and service providers mobilised for this project

  • €50 M

of investment, 14% subsidised by the State, IDFM and the European Union

  • 1,186

    secure bicycle spaces

At the heart of this 1st stage of transformation:

  • more connections between modes of transport
  • fluid and simplified layouts
  • intermodality completely redesigned  around the station
  • improved waiting comfort
  • an appropriate offering of services and shops

A redesigned station experience for passengers

Signalétique Gare du Nord

A more fluid layout for customers

A new, larger, more visible and brighter signage system, deployed throughout the station, makes it easier and quicker for passengers to find their way around. It now includes names for the halls (hall 1: main lines, hall 2: cross-Channel terminal) as well as large totems to better guide passengers to the underground RER and metro lines.

To improve connections between modes of transport within the station (TGV, RER, metro, etc.), new links between the different levels: 2 escalators and 1 staircase have been created in particular to simplify passage between the platforms of lines H and K and the suburban mezzanine (towards the RER trains).

Commerces Gare du Nord

New shops and services

The outlets closed since 2019 have all been re-marketed. Between 2022 and 2024, almost 50 shops have been renewed to meet the increasingly diverse expectations of customers (practical purchases, everyday services, food shops, cultural offer). On the redesigned forecourt of Gare du Nord, passengers will be able to find an Île-de-France Mobilités sales office, where advisors will be on hand to meet the diverse needs of passengers. It will be accessible to people with reduced mobility and will have a family area alongside the waiting area.

New waiting areas

100 new seats have been created for Eurostar customers in the cross-Channel terminal. Passengers on RER B and D lines now have 80 extra seats on the platforms. The removal of three kiosks has, for its part, made it possible to create 60 seats in hall 1 for main line passengers.

In addition, a new reception area for people with reduced mobility and disabilities has been installed at the heart of the station, enabling twice as many passengers to be accommodated as before.

A better integrated multimodal station

Designed to last

With its roof covered by 1,100m² of photovoltaic panels (567 panels), this bicycle hall operates by self-consumption, with an average annual electricity production of 170 MWh. The structure also makes it possible to harvest rainwater to water the adjoining green spaces. The building, with its metal and wood structure, has a glass roof, part of which has been reused, to let in natural light. Its glass rooflight comes from the renovation of the Centre Pompidou's circulation galleries.
Chantier Gare du Nord

A new eco-bus station

The bus station, where almost 100,000 passengers make their connections every day, has been completely refurbished. It has been transformed into a modern, secure and welcoming eco-bus station, in compliance with accessibility standards. The refurbishment of the bus station is accompanied by the installation of new shelters for passengers, seating and dynamic information screens to provide greater comfort.
