Parvis de la gare de Rennes

Two trains, one track

It’s a first in France! At Rennes station, in northwestern France, two trains travelling to and from different places can now be at the same platform at the same time. The objective has been met, with 120 additional TERs a week operating since September 2024.

2 TMV, a first in France

Baptised 2 TMV—short for “two trains on the same track” in French—the system works using innovative signalling. Rennes station installed signal bridges for the 20 new railway signals required to automate the arrival and departure of two trains at its platforms. This new mid-platform signalling allows two trains arriving at the same platform to depart in either the same or opposite directions. After two years of works, all 10 platform tracks at Rennes station are now equipped with the 2 TMV signalling system.

Boosting station capacity

This operation—funded by the French State, the French region of Brittany, Greater Rennes, and SNCF Réseau—has allowed Brittany’s regional authorities and SNCF Voyageurs to boost the regional express train offer with an additional 24 TERs a day from September 2024. The 2 TMV system helps boost train usage by meeting mobility demands and fostering low-carbon travel.
