A biotank fuel for rail freight installed in Côte d’Or

SNCF Réseau and Europorte have joined forces and installed a 100% plant-based fuel tank at the Gevrey-Perrigny site in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, that will supply the rail operator's engines. This innovation in favor of the decarbonization of freight transport is a first in France.

The 1ˢᵗ biotank fuel on our premises

SNCF Réseau has set up a tank containing 100% plant-based fuel on the Gevrey-Perrigny sorting yard site in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The tank will be used to power the engines of its partner Europorte France, a rail operator specializing in low-carbon transport at the helm of this project. After working for several months hand-in-hand in selecting the ideal location, the €34,000 tank, financed by Europorte, was inaugurated in Perrigny-lès-Dijon.

Why the Gevrey-Perrigny site is an asset

In the Côte-d'Or region, the Gevrey-Chambertin sorting yard, to which the Perrigny-lès-Dijon site is connected, is one of the five largest rail hubs in France. With around 80 kilometers of tracks, the site deals with several hundred freight trains each week, and links the North-Northeast and South-Southeast lines.

Why rail freight transport is strategic for SNCF Réseau

Rail freight represents a major challenge for SNCF Réseau in terms of sustainable development, traffic development, economic development and regional employment. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, more than 200 km of lines are dedicated to rail freight transport, with an average of more than 20,000 trains running per year.

Rail freight to fight global warming

  • Each freight train keeps

    30 to 40

    trucks off the roads

  • This means

    14

    times less CO2 emissions

  • And

    6

    times less energy consumption

Rail is galvanizing an entire industrial sector, it's good for the planet, it's good for jobs, it's good for regional vitality!”

Europorte, leading the way in decarbonizing transport

Europorte is the first railway company which carried out tests in 2021, replacing non-road diesel (GNR) with a biofuel in an engine used in commercial service on two non-electrified lines. Produced from 100% French rapeseed residues, renewable and biodegradable, this fuel makes for a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions on these routes.

Being the first rail freight operator to run on biofuel is a real source of pride for us, as it is fully aligned with the Group's policy of fighting global warming, and with its strong drive to innovate for its customers, while maintaining high service quality and safety.”
