SNCF launches AI research program at the École Polytechnique
On 4 September 2024, a new research program created by the SNCF Group, École Polytechnique and its foundation was inaugurated. It will focus on artificial intelligence and transport optimisation. This strategic project for both partners aims to rally students around the challenges of sustainable mobility.
A strategic partnership
The SNCF Group and École Polytechnique have inaugurated the ‘Artificial Intelligence and Optimisation for Mobility’ research program. It aims to develop approaches that combine operational research and artificial intelligence (AI).
The recruitment and training of researchers, PhD students, postdoc students and engineers will be funded by this program, which will focus on AI and the optimisation of transport networks. Engineering students will also be able to work on the challenges of sustainable mobility.
AI applied to mobility
The SNCF Group is already developing innovative AI-based technologies, meant in particular to optimise infrastructure management, improve the reliability of rolling stock thanks to predictive maintenance, allow for better planning of road maintenance tasks as well as better forecasting of work dates, and predict train delays and their impact in order to inform passengers.
Bringing together engineers from SNCF and researchers from École polytechnique, this new program will make it possible to combine their skills and put them to work for public transport.

For the SNCF Group, this is a real opportunity to reinforce our position as a key ‘tech’ player in transport and to deepen our expertise in artificial intelligence.”
