Our ERTMS lab—gateway to a single European signalling system

Our Centre for Rolling Stock Engineering in Le Mans is home to France’s national testing laboratory for the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Researchers there are developing smart, robotic testing processes that will help harmonize railway networks across Europe.

The cutting edge

The ERTMS1 France Laboratory (EFL) is a leading player in laboratory testing of railway safety equipment. This cutting-edge facility is paving the way for testing and certification of the European Train Control System (ETCS), a key component of ERTMS.

Creating a unified European signalling system

ETCS2 is set to replace the many different national signalling systems now used on Europe’s railway networks. Once in place, it will let trains cross borders quickly and operate safely—first on high-speed lines, and later on the rest of the network.

Cross-border testing

ETCS is now being tested on railways in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and other countries. It will allow for interoperable signalling and speed control that can adapt to existing trackside equipment.

TRY&CERT—a new EIG for railway safety

SNCF Voyageurs—home to the ERTMS Lab—has partnered with Certifer Group, an international leader in inspection, certification and testing for rail and urban transport, to create TRY&CERT. This economic interest grouping (EIG) combines the expertise and skill of an ISO 17025-certified national test lab with the independent assessment of a Notified Body for rail safety.
