Our climate commitments validated by Science Based Targets initiative

SNCF Group's global greenhouse gas emission reduction targets were validated on July 28, 2025, by the leading organization that helps companies to decarbonize their activities. This proves that our contribution is consistent with the Paris Agreement on climate change.

SNCF Group has set for itself ambitious targets in line with the Paris Agreement:

  • -42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in scopes 1 and 2 between 2022 and 2030
  • additional targets to be later set for indirect emissions in scope 31.

These commitments to reducing the Group’s activities’ greenhouse gas emissions have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This international organization supports companies’ decarbonization efforts using a science-based methodology.

A decisive step for the Group

Following the validation of Keolis' and GEODIS' targets in 2024, the approval of SBTi proves that the trajectory submitted by SNCF Group is in line with the Paris Agreement signed in 2015 to limit global warming. This validation thus marks a decisive step in our climate strategy.

What are our levers for action?

How we plan to achieve a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Reducing our energy consumption

  • Widespread adoption of eco-driving and eco-parking: professional practices have already enabled SNCF Voyageurs to avoid 22,000 tCO2e of emissions between 2022 and 2024.
  • Heating and air conditioning control, switch to LED lighting, real-time monitoring of energy consumption (e.g., more than 600 stations equipped with Smart Station centralized supervision).
  • Improved train aerodynamics, optimized freight loading (+10% increase in GEODIS container loading rates thanks to a new software program), gradual replacement of the existing fleet with more efficient equipment (eco-design, energy efficiency, increased capacity).

Decarbonizing and securing our supplies

  • In our property: phasing out fuel oil (and eventually natural gas), connecting buildings to district heating networks where possible, installing heat pumps.
  • In our vehicles: use of biofuels, electrification of motor engines during mid-life operations or fleet renewal.
  • Development of renewable energies with SNCF Renouvelables or through long-term renewable energy purchase agreements.
