Jean-Pierre Farandou weighs in on the climate transition
A few weeks before France’s 2022 presidential election, Jean-Pierre Farandou, then SNCF CEO, joined the national conversation, calling for a doubling of rail’s share of transport as vital for a real climate transition. His white paper was published by the Jean-Jaurès Foundation1 and covered widely by the media.
Reaching carbon neutrality
France has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Can rail play a critical role in decarbonizing mobility to achieve this goal?
For Jean-Pierre Farandou, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, doubling rail’s share of passenger and freight transport over the next 10-15 years is the only way to reach the target set in the Paris Agreement2. But less CO2 isn’t the only benefit. More rail will create jobs for young people, expand local services, give France more appeal, deepen ties with its European neighbours and more.
