GEODIS tests offshore energy storage model off the Italian coast
Our company provided Sizable Energy its engineering and transportation expertise to deploy an offshore energy storage system the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool off the coast of Calabria, Italy.

Providing our engineering expertise
GEODIS leverages its expertise to support the integration of renewable energy into the power grid. We partnered with the Italian company Sizable Energy—which specializes in renewable energy storage—to design and install a storage model located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Calabria, Italy. This project demonstrates our company’s ability to help our clients in the next-generation energy technology sector.
An innovative marine energy technology
This system is designed to store electricity produced by offshore wind turbines or other renewable energy sources and then deliver it back to the grid when demand increases. By decoupling production and consumption periods, this technology helps strengthen the stability of the power grid while providing an alternative to conventional battery energy storage systems (BESS).
GEODIS’ mission
Our teams helped launch, tow and install the storage prototype by:
- performing lifting calculations and drawings
- defining the crane positioning
- designing the lifting plans, slings and rigging
- developing installation procedures, as well as the engineering for towing and mooring hook-up operation
- providing technical support and on-site supervision throughout the operations to ensure a safe and proper execution
A tricky operation
The offshore reservoir measures 50 meters in diameter, which is equivalent to the surface area of an Olympic swimming pool and weighs approximately 11 tonnes. Its launch required the use of a 350-tonne crane to perform a lift with an outreach of approximately 50 meters, to meet the site constraints and environmental requirements. This operation demonstrates GEODIS’ expertise in precise lift engineering and complex offshore activities.
