Toulouse Matabiau station transformed
After 3 years of renovation, in September 2023 we unveiled Toulouse Matabiau’s new look. The station’s transformation has made it more accessible, more customer-friendly and more connected.
The NeÔmatabiau project
It took 3 years of renovation, led by SNCF Gares & Connexions with the help of AREP1, to transform the station into a modern transit hub in a lively public space. This was the first step in a project dubbed NeÔmatabiau and a precursor to future developments on the site, notably the new Halle des transports complex. With support from the regional government, this new structure will be the linchpin of a future multimodal hub.
A station where travellers will enjoy spending time
The NeÔmatabiau project prioritizes spaces and services that make life easier and more relaxing for travellers. These include a cheerful waiting area, modern toilets, a customer service desk for passengers with limited mobility, and a lost-and-found centre. The station’s 2 concourses and retail area house around 15 shops and fast-food dining options. And on the second floor, there’s a 500m² space designed to host corporate and private events.
More comfortable, better information and easier to navigate
The Toulouse Matabiau Station’s transformation aims to offer all travellers the best possible experience. For example, there are new tactile strips and sound cues to help the blind and visually impaired get around, along with a direct, accessible entrance to the metro from the forecourt for people with limited mobility. It also features a simplified layout, new signage and a wider northside underground passageway leading directly to the centre of the platforms.
A group effort
To successfully complete its plans to transform Toulouse Matabiau station, SNCF Gares & Connexions relied on support from the European Union, the French government, and the Occitanie regional authorities. Their active involvement highlights just how important this major infrastructure and services project was at every level of government.

Enhancing an architectural legacy
One goal of the NéÔmatabiau project is to restore and enhance the historical landmark while making it more modern and accessible to better serve passengers. The renovation highlights the original metal architectural elements and restored canopy, made possible with support from the Occitanie region. Woodwork on the facade facing the nearby Canal du Midi was also restored, and Concourse 2 was expanded. This work brought more light into the space while revealing its striking design.
