Our interlocking systems are going digital
We’re rolling out a new generation of interlocking systems. The goal: digitalize all key infrastructure across the network over the coming decades and bring their management together in a single, centralized platform powered by ARGOS technology.
A trail-blazing railway line in Grand Est
In a modest yet promising debut, the line between Réding (Moselle) and Saverne (Bas-Rhin) is the first in France to adopt this revolutionary technology. On 23 November 2025, ARGOS—a vital component of the new rail signalling system—was launched along this 20-km stretch of track in eastern central France.
Across France, we’re replacing traditional electromechanical, electric and mechanical interlocking systems —key elements of the nationwide rail network—with ARGOS digital interlocking systems. Existing systems controlled switches, crossings and signalling on track sections, and relied on technology that is now obsolete. Their replacement Is essential. In the decades ahead, the transition to ARGOS will enable centralized management of all interlocking systems nationwide.

The advantages of an ultra-efficient solution
ARGOS delivers a more robust and resilient system, ensuring real-time communication between switches, crossings and signalling posts, all managed from a centralized platform. It also drives major cost efficiencies through:
- Industrial processes developed with partners that reduce deployment time by 30% (two years instead of three)
- Real-time network monitoring tools
- Simplified architecture, standardized components and more efficient maintenance, which together reduce costs by 15%
Innovative technology developed by a consortium
ARGOS represents a major industrial innovation. Launched in 2018 by a consortium comprising SNCF Réseau and three technology providers (including two partner groupings):
- Alstom
- Compagnie des Signaux - Systra - Eiffage Énergie Systèmes
- Hitachi Rail GTS France - INEO SCLE FERROVIAIRE - SNIC SIGNALISATION.
A total of €90 million has been invested in ARGOS to digitalize the network’s interlocking systems.

Paving the way for ERTMS
Beyond improving rail operation, efficiency and maintenance, ARGOS digitalized interlocking systems lay essential groundwork for deploying the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). ERTMS is an interoperable, Europe-wide digital signalling system designed to deliver the highest levels of safety and efficiency. It supports rail operations based on precise, real-time data on train positions and speeds.
