Our ties to the French State
For 45 years after our founding in 1938, SNCF was a société anonyme, or public limited company. We later became a state-owned industrial and commercial enterprise (établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial or EPIC), but in January 2020 we returned to our original structure.
By law, the French State is the Group’s sole shareholder: SNCF is and will remain a state-owned enterprise.
Serving everyone, everywhere
Closer to customers
Keeping SNCF passengers and employees safe. Operating a high-performance network. Ensuring that our trains run on time. Improving passenger information.
These are our top priorities, and as we make SNCF more connected, more customer-centric and more efficient, we’ll deliver increasingly personalized services and give each customer more individual attention.
Fighting global warming
The climate is in crisis, and we owe it to the planet and future generations to respond.
Low-carbon rail transport is already one of the best solutions to global warming. But we’re also fighting climate change by cutting 26% of our CO2e emissions by 2030, raising €5 billion in green bonds, and eliminating glyphosate use.
Serving local communities
As a public service company, we have a comprehensive offer—high-speed trains, urban mass transit, last-mile service and more—to meet the needs of every traveller and every community. And we deliver quality, accessible rail service for all, with mobility solutions for every budget.
More competitive, more efficient
Now that the passenger market has opened to competition and the French State has assumed €35 billion of SNCF Group debt, we face a business challenge: getting operations back on a sound financial footing and becoming more competitive.
The solution: seek excellence. By raising revenue, cutting operating costs, optimizing our investments and modernizing our assets, we can deliver satisfaction for all of our customers—passengers, businesses, shippers and local communities.
