SNCF purchasing supports regional employment

Did you know? In 2023, the €14.6 billion spent by the SNCF in France supported 1% of national employment, or 265,000 indirect jobs, and contributed €19 billion to the country's GDP. Here's how.

What are SNCF's main purchases?

Our expenditure covers a wide range of needs, such as:

  • Maintenance work on railway lines;
  • The acquisition of new rolling stock;
  • Station maintenance and operation;
  • The IT sector;
  • Current expenditure.

Breakdown of expenditure by limited company

  • SNCF Réseau: €6.2 billion
  • SNCF Voyageurs: €5.8 billion
  • SNCF SA: €1.3 billion
  • SNCF Gares & Connexions: €1.1 billion
  • Fret SNCF: €0.2 billion

Over 265,000 indirect jobs supported

Every euro spent with our suppliers contributes to local employment and GDP, thanks to a double knock-on effect:

  • Via the salaries received and the taxes paid by the employees of the companies concerned;
  • Through the activity of our partners' suppliers and subcontractors.
  • 97%

    of our suppliers are French

  • In 2023

    265,933

    jobs were supported by the SNCF, representing 1% of national employment

  • €19 billion

    is our contribution to GDP, i.e. 0.8% of the national total

The pillars of our purchasing policy

Work with local SMEs

The SNCF is committed to both large groups and small and medium-sized companies, with €2.4 billion worth of purchases from 12,675 SMEs in 2023 (out of a total of 20,000 active suppliers).

Mobilise for the ecological transition

Our purchasing policy includes a decarbonation strategy. As a result, since 1 January 2023, a "carbon score" has been introduced into our calls for tender: when a tender is issued, the CO2 emissions associated with the product or service purchased now account for at least 5% of the score used to decide between candidates.

We also incorporate CSR criteria, which now account for 20% of the rating. This approach concerned 60% of contracted expenditure in 2023 (compared with 52% in 2022).

Encourage solidarity-based purchases

Although solidarity-based purchases accounted for a modest €42 million in 2023, they have a strong social impact, particularly on the 500 structures in the social and solidarity sector with which the SNCF has worked. Our goal is to reach €50 million in solidarity-based purchases in 2024 and €100 million by 2030.

Since 2012, the company has been recognised by the Médiation des Entreprises (French Company Ombudsman) and the Conseil National des Achats (French National Purchasing Council) for its exemplary purchasing practices, having renewed its Relations Fournisseurs & Achats Responsables (Supplier Relations & Responsible Purchasing) label in 2022.
