Tomorrow’s rail system will be more reliable and even more decarbonized to grow trains’ modal share and offer more mobility options in French regions.
The cutting edge of sustainable mobility
New technologies and the climate imperative are transforming mobility. And rail—compact, energy-efficient, and already largely decarbonized—is at the forefront of the transition.
At SNCF Group, we aim to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, while offering reliable passenger and freight service that meets the needs of everyone, everywhere—and costs less. To reach this goal, we’re developing new solutions, including hydrogen power, biofuels and batteries, frugal electrification, and innovative bio-based materials.

Developing mobility for all
To meet this goal, our employees work hard every day to deliver more mobility options, more safety and even better performance. We’re inventing new systems to make tomorrow’s trains more connected, more flexible and more eco-friendly.
Revitalizing rural lines
But innovation is more than transforming the rail system for the long term. It also means meeting the short-term challenges of serving lightly populated areas. That’s why we’re pioneering light trains, very light trains and new forms of shared transport that will repurpose local lines and go beyond the reach of classic rail.
Technologies of the future
Our innovation teams are always keen to identify emerging technologies that will make our rail network perform better. We develop their breakthroughs over a range of time horizons, working with a wide range of academic and industrial partners—from start-ups to giant corporations.
Innovating across Europe
SNCF Group is actively involved in creating an interoperable European rail area to fuel growth in this exemplary, eco-friendly transport mode. We’re working hard with our partners to create both a unified set of regulations and shared technologies to facilitate the movement of people and goods throughout the European Union.
