A wealth of social and cultural backgrounds

Because SNCF has a public service mission, it’s vital for us to reflect the diversity of the broader society. That’s why we recruit in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, where hiring practices often remain discriminatory.

Our actions

Operational preparation for employment (POE)

Through the POE programme (Préparation opérationnelle à l’emploi), SNCF Group is giving access to out of job people or people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods targeted for urban renewal1 to its professions, including those requiring strong technical skills.

Designed by France Travail and SNCF, this programme funds people’s training before they’re hired. Based on the technical specifications drawn up by our management and serving as teaching objectives, the training course is delivered by an organization partnering with SNCf. Through this training job-seeking candidates thus acquire or upgrade the professional skills required to take up a position. Launched a few years ago, POE allows us to fill positions in the energy trade needing to be filled urgently.

What is 'Préparation opérationnelle à l'emploi'?

Employment through internships

SNCF Group is committed to École de la 2e Chance, which helps young people access training that opens doors to the job market. Together, they offer young people internships in our sales and rolling stock maintenance departments, sometimes leading to block release training contracts, fixed-term contracts and permanent contracts.

Mentoring young people

SNCF Foundation encourages Group employees to mentor young people in school or looking for a job. Each volunteer meets regularly with the young person with whom he or she forms a two-person team to provide advice and support. An effective response to education disparities, this customised and dedicated support helps to prevent young people from dropping out of school.

New Skills School (L’École des Nouvelles Compétences)

In June 2019 ten job seekers from disadvantaged neighbourhoods targeted for urban renewal1 trained as web developers at our New Skills School (L’École des Nouvelles Compétences), a job readiness programme SNCF developed with the Plaine Commune2 employment agency. On completing the five-month certification course, these interns signed permanent employment contracts with SNCF Connect.
