RLE accelerates the decarbonization of rail freight in Europe
Rail Logistics Europe’s first CSR report underscores our commitment to the green transition.
Rail freight: a powerful lever for decarbonization
With transport accounting for over 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in France, expanding rail freight is one of the most effective ways to decarbonize supply chains.
SNCF subsidiary Rail Logistics Europe emits just 9 g of CO2e per tonne-kilometer transported—11 times less than road haulage— making it a crucial player in the low-carbon transition.
Supporting Europe’s climate ambitions
In 2025, RLE’s rail operations avoided 2.4 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions compared with equivalent road transport solutions.
The company also confirmed its alignment with European climate objectives: 66% of its revenue is now eligible under the European Green Taxonomy, the classification system designed to channel investment toward sustainable activities.
These results fully support SNCF Group’s decarbonization strategy, which is aligned with international commitments. They reflect efforts to consume less energy, use it more efficiently and shift to cleaner options.
CSR strategy built around 4 priorities
Rail Logistics Europe’s CSR strategy is aligned with SNCF Group’s broader roadmap and structured around four key priorities:
- Expand rail freight to decarbonize supply chains
- Reduce the environmental footprint of operations
- Foster diversity, inclusion and employee engagement
- Build trusted, long-term partnerships
These commitments are being rolled out in all RLE Group entities—Hexafret, Captrain, Technis, Forwardis, Naviland Cargo and VIIA—in all 13 European countries where the Group operates.

Delivering measurable progress
- Energy-related greenhouse gas emissions fell by nearly 30% between 2022 and 2025
- 81% of all transport is now powered by electric traction
- Innovative solutions are accelerating this momentum, from eco-driving and bi-mode locomotives, to biofuel alternatives and renewable electricity sourcing.
Together these advances let the Group offer customers increasingly sustainable logistics solutions.
People and engagement at the heart of the strategy
RLE places people at the centre of its strategy. How? By attracting, developing and retaining top talent. By strengthening workplace safety. And by promoting a shared culture built around common values: Committed together: We Care, We Connect, We Deliver.
Equally important is a structured approach to responsible business practices across all operations, including:
- Strong business ethics
- Fighting corruption in all its forms
- Respect for human rights
- Cybersecurity
- Duty of care
- Sustainable procurement
Through this approach, RLE aims to anticipate risks, ensure regulatory compliance and embed long-term sustainable performance across the business. With nearly 9,300 employees, RLE brings these commitments to life every day to deliver safer, more sustainable, and more efficient transport solutions.

Driving sustainable growth at SNCF Group
As well as supporting its own workforce and community, RLE contributes to SNCF Group’s financial and operational resilience. In the long run, a more attractive rail freight sector will also have a wider economic impact, driving industrial activity, regional development and the independence of European supply chains.
Our aim is clear: make rail freight a cornerstone of Europe’s green transition by combining financial performance, social responsibility and environmental commitment.
Looking after our customers, our employees and the environment, while ensuring the safety of our operations and our people, is entirely compatible with strong performance. In fact, it’s a driver!
