A “Notable” certification to showcase our train stations

On September 16, 2026, SNCF Gares & Connexions launched the “Notable station” certification to give recognition for the architectural, historical, or aesthetic value of train stations. Forty-seven of these stations have been highlighted across the country.

Promoting this remarkable heritage

The label created by SNCF Gares & Connexions is meant to highlight train stations that are of particular architectural or heritage interest—either because they are part of a complex or the work of a renowned architect, or because they tell a story about the railway history, or the urban, social, or cultural history of the region where they are located.

Its aim is twofold :

  • raising public awareness of this heritage
  • advocating for its preservation

How is a station certified?

A scientific committee, composed of members coming from public institutions, local governments, and academia, will be set up in early 2027.

Its mission will consist in:

  • submitting a proposal for an inventory listing potential future “Notable train stations”
  • awarding the designation based on a methodology specific to train station heritage

Protecting and renovating train stations

This label is part of a comprehensive program to modernize and renovate our infrastructure. By the end of 2026, 350 million euros will have been invested in its makeover.

Throughout France, we strive to make our historical train stations more attuned to the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s visitors as well as to the day-to-day work of our staff.

This means adapting and optimizing resources in order to meet contemporary challenges– particularly those related to climate change adaptation– without compromising the historical heritage of our train stations. The teams at SNCF Gares & Connexions are therefore working hard to make stations more resilient to extreme weather conditions.

Our 3,000 train stations are much more than just places people pass through: they are an integral part of our French heritage—many of them are, in fact, designated or listed as Monuments historiques—and we can be proud of them.
