Safety and risk management

Safety is at the heart of our purchasing policy. That’s why our Group Procurement Department vets the quality, reliability and safety of each and every Group supplier. We believe in building strong partnerships, and that starts with open communication and trust. Learn about our safety priorities and what we look for when selecting our suppliers.

At SNCF Group, safety is a top priority—right alongside on-time performance and passenger information. Our Group Procurement Department leads the charge, actively embedding supplier quality and safety standards into our daily operations to ensure continuous performance improvements and customer satisfaction. As the guardian of supplier standards, the department ensures every partner meets rigorous quality and safety practices.

To that end, SNCF Group is committed to working closely with its external partners—listening, supporting and helping them grow and improve.

Safety—first and foremost

At SNCF, safety isn’t just our priority—it’s our foundation. Thanks to PRISME, our flagship safety initiative, the number of serious incidents has been cut in half since 2015. But even one incident is too many, since every statistic represents a real person, be they SNCF employees or external partners. Because any safety incident is unacceptable, SNCF has launched the Tous Partenaires en Sécurité (We’re All Partners in Security) programme.

We’re All Partners in Security—working together for safer sites

While our partner companies are responsible for their teams, SNCF aims to foster a shared safety culture that ensures everyone, on every worksite, stays healthy and safe.

Our objective? To collaborate with contracting firms working on our premises and implement concrete actions so their teams adopt SNCF’s proven safety rules, processes and standards.

Prioritizing safety in every contract

From now on, safety criteria will carry more weight in our tender evaluations and contract awards.

We will also monitor the safety records of contractor firms operating on SNCF sites even more closely. This, in turn, will enable us identify risks early, and strengthen partner companies’ safety culture.

Practical safety measures for everyone on site

To minimize the risk of serious or fatal incidents, contractor teams at our sites must be able to assess risks and apply effective prevention, just as our own employees do. To help these external partners adopt SNCF’s safety culture, they now systematically take part in our risk prevention and analysis programmes, and are encouraged to embrace SNCF’s safety rituals, best practices and expertise. We all stay safer when we learn from and watch out for each other: that’s the message SNCF wants to hammer home.

Fostering a shared culture of safety

Contractor firms working with SNCF are still responsible for training their teams and ensuring their safety. Our goal is not to take over that role, but to work closely with them to build a shared safety culture—one that protects the health and wellbeing of everyone across our worksites and premises.

Shared commitment: a joint charter for SNCF Group and its partners

This approach is outlined in our We’re All Partners in Security programme and formalized in a joint charter between SNCF Group and external partners. The charter reaffirms the safety principles that govern all operations carried out by SNCF and its external partners, and reiterates their joint commitment.

It ensures that effective measures are implemented to protect teams working on every SNCF site.
