Interview with Loïg Chesnais-Girard, President of the Region
Public transportation is essential to balanced development and maintaining string connections across the region. In an interview, Loïg Chesnais-Girard explains why continued investment in Brittany is essential to ensure high-quality public transport services.
Armor Lux, weaving Breton links for SNCF Group
Quimper, in Brittany, is home to the factories of Armox Lux, supplier of the emblematic outfits worn by our public-facing agents since 2007. There are many steps to crafting this very special knitwear: once knitted and dyed in the historic workshop, it's off to the cutting workshop, where the pieces of clothing are then assembled by the seamstresses. The textile company based in Finistère also relies on solid French industrial partners in order to manufacture certain elements of the 300,000 outfits made each year for the SNCF Group.

Actively enhancing quality of life in the region

Bringing local businesses and public services to people
We’re testing a multi-service truck called ACTIMOB that brings local shops and public services to residents in the 19 communities of the Landivisiau area in the Finistère, France’s westernmost department. This innovative “mobile enterprise” features counter space for shops and a small office space for routine administrative tasks. It rotates between communities, ensuring everyone gets access. An online platform lets residents view scheduled stops and allows shop-owners to reserve counter space by the half-day.

Bringing shared mobility solutions to life
Our “rural mobility stations” promote shared transport solutions in the countryside. These stations were designed with input from AREP, SNCF’s multidisciplinary architecture and urban planning firm, and are now being tested in the Finistère department. They inform local residents of the low-carbon active mobility options available for everyday trips—from cargo and longtail bikes to electric mini-cars. Station flagpoles double as hubs for carpooling and hitchhiking, reminding people that there are better ways to get around than private cars—especially for short trips.

Reopening smaller lines with a smart, cost-effective solution
SNCF’s Tech4Mobility teams are piloting the FLEXY system to connect communities with no railroad station. How does it work? The CARFLEX electric rail-road shuttle, equipped with Michelin-patented tyres, is designed to transition seamlessly from rail tracks to roads. It carries up to 13 passengers and is being tested in Brittany, which is a member of the FLEXY consortium.
In 2023, the shuttle was successfully trialled on a disused rail line connecting Rosporden and Concarneau and local roads in Finistère. FLEXY is scheduled to begin commercial service in 2027.

Introducing sustainable shopping at L’Hermitage-Mordelles station
At this station in the Ille-et-Vilaine department, local residents and travellers (60,000 each year) can shop more sustainably thanks to a second-hand store on the building’s ground floor. The 121 m² space is run by a non-profit, L’Échappée Benne. It raises locals’ awareness of the environmental impact of waste and—in partnership with the Rennes city reuse centre—collects a wide variety of household goods that would normally be discarded. These items are sorted, refurbished and sold at affordable prices at the L’Hermitage-Mordelles station thrift shop. This initiative cuts waste and promotes alternative, more sustainable consumption.
Teaching the next generation about rail safety
During the 2023-24 school year, we brought our IMS outreach programmes to 3,256 students in Brittany between the ages of 9 and 18—a 33% increase over the previous year.
Upgrading rail infrastructure in Brittany
This year, SNCF Réseau is again working to make sure rail infrastructure in the region is safe and reliable. Current efforts are underway on the Morlaix - Brest and Rennes - Saint-Malo lines, where we’re replacing rail components to strengthen the network and improve performance.
